Chapter 4: The Self and Interaction

EXPRESSIONS OF BEHAVIOR: tools we use to project our definitions of the situation to others. Ex: eye roll or a nod (page.107).This can relate to Storm using her super power known as ECOLOGICAL EMPATHY, which is being able to sense the overall well-being and condition of one's immediate environment.

Chapter 6: Deviance

DEVIANCE: a behavior, trait, belief, or other characteristic that violates a norm and causes a negative reaction.
POSITIVE DEVIANCE: actions considered deviant within a given context but are later reinterpreted as appropriate or even heroic.
Storm demonstrates this by defeating many different villains such as Magneto, Mr.Sinaster, The Blob and a ton of others.

Chapter 8: Race and Ethnicity as Lived Experience

RACE: a socially defined category based on real or perceived biological differences between groups of people. (page. 217)
ETHNICITY: a socially defined category based on common language, religion, nationality, history, or another cultural factor. (page. 218)

What is a MINORITY?

A minority is commonly thought of as a group that is smaller in numbers than the dominant group.( page.221)
*Storm can be categorized as a minority seeing how she is from Kenya, therefore of African descent. This being said could lead her to be a victim of racism, prejudice, and discrimination.
RACISM: A set of beliefs about the superiority of one racial or ethnic group; used to justify equality and often rooted in the assumption that differences between groups are genetic.(page.222)
PREJUDICE: an idea about the characteristics of a group that is applied to all members of that group and is unlikely to change regardless of the evidence against it.(page. 222)
DISCRIMINATION: unequal treatment of individuals based on their membership in a social group; usually motivated by prejudice.(page. 222)

Chapter 10:The Macro-Micro Link in Social Institutions: Politics, Education, and Religion

Education: the process by which a society transmits its knowledge, values, and expectations to its members so they can function effectively. (page. 294)
Religion: any institutionalized system of shared beliefs and rituals that identify a relationship between the sacred and the profane. (page.302)

POWER!

What is Power?
Power is having the ability to impose one's will on others.
Storm is a very powerful woman. She was born into a family of witches who have a natural gift of sorcery. She has complete control over the weather, but also people since she has witchcraft potential and is an omega level mutant.

Chapter 9: Constructing Gender and Sexuality

Gender: the physical, behavioral, and personality traits that a group, considers normal for its male and female members.(page. 243)
Sexuality: an individual's membership in one of the two biologically distinct categories-male or female.(page.243)

INSTRUMENTAL ROLE: the position of the family member who provides the family's material support and is often an authority figure.(page. 247)

Although the X-Men are not a family biologically, their super mutant powers brought them together in a group much like a family.
Storm became leader of the X-men when Cyclops decided to take a hiatus. She was skeptic at first but then realized with the help of her "family" that she was fit for the job. She not only helped her "family members" when needed but also stood as a partner against the stresses the non-mutant world put on them.
